LCI
// 2016
Overview
LCI (Télévision Indépendante), a major French news broadcaster, operating hybrid model of linear TV, streaming, and VOD.
The Challenge: In 2016, traditional broadcasters faced existential pressure. Audiences expected modern, personalized digital experiences, but LCI’s infrastructure and culture were built for linear TV. Complete redesign needed across Web, Mobile App, and IPTV—three platforms with radically different constraints.

Role & Responsibilities
As freelance UI designer embedded with LCI team:
Platform Architecture: Analyzed constraints and opportunities of each platform.
Design Patterns: Created common vocabulary enabling optimized interfaces per platform.
Component System: Built scalable design system with adaptive components.
Real-Time Integration: Designed patterns for live updates and breaking news.
Cross-Device Continuity: Enabled resume-watching across platforms.
Change Management: Helped organization transition from TV to product thinking
Constraints & Complexity
Timeline: 6 months with multiple stakeholders.
Three Radically Different Platforms: Web (keyboard/mouse), App (touch/mobile), IPTV (remote/10-foot). Identical interface impossible; required thoughtful translation of principles.
Real-Time Data: Constant updates needed design that handled urgency without chaos.
Technical Legacy: Work within existing backend while introducing modern patterns.
Key Learnings
The goal was to reduce cognitive load and enable faster, more confident decision-making.
Multi-Platform Coherence Requires Compromise
Identical interfaces across platforms is unachievable. Instead, shared principles with platform-specific implementations. Embrace differences as features.
Design Systems Enable Organizational Scale
System adoption takes time, but unlocks: faster shipping, consistency at scale, reduced design debt. System became how organization moved.
Organizational Culture Shapes Product Design
Broadcast = schedule-thinking. Digital = behavior-thinking. This wasn’t design problem, it was organizational culture problem. Change management as critical as UX.
Legacy Brands Can Modernize With Intentionality
Kept iconic elements (red color) while modernizing aesthetic. Evolution not revolution. Modernization isn’t erasure—it’s intentional evolution.
